2027: INEC registers 2 new parties as opposition gears up for fierce battle

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the registration of two new political parties — the Independent Democrats (ID) and the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).
The announcement, made public on Tuesday through an official notice signed by INEC Secretary, Mrs. A.C. Ogakwu, was sighted by this publication. The notice confirmed that both parties met all constitutional and legal requirements as outlined in the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
According to INEC, the registration process involved thorough scrutiny of each party’s constitution, manifesto, flag, logo, and list of national executive officers.
Political observers interpret the development as a strategic move by anti-Tinubu forces aiming to consolidate efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle. With the new entrants now officially part of the political space, analysts believe the opposition is positioning for a broader coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Although the new parties are yet to formally declare their political alliances, sources within the opposition reveal that high-level consultations are underway. These talks are reportedly aimed at unifying various factions under a single front to increase the chances of unseating President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Already, political stakeholders in the South-West and North-Central zones are said to be holding closed-door meetings to harmonise strategies and solidify plans ahead of the 2027 polls.
While the registration of the new parties is constitutionally valid, many view it as a tactical gain for the opposition seeking to tap into rising public dissatisfaction and economic hardship currently facing the nation.
As momentum builds toward the 2027 elections, Nigeria’s political atmosphere is heating up, setting the stage for what could be a fiercely contested race.
