Ameh mourns as Edwin Clark passes on

Nigeria has lost one of its most formidable voices in national affairs, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, who passed away at the age of 97.

Renowned for his unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice, Clark’s impact on the country’s political and socio-economic landscape remains profound.

His passing has been described as a significant loss to Nigeria, with tributes pouring in from various quarters. Among them, Peter Ameh, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), highlighted Clark’s lifelong dedication to fairness and national unity.

“Today, Nigeria mourns the loss of a true statesman, Edwin Clark. His unwavering commitment to national participation, diversity, and truth inspired generations. His remarkable life was a testament to his dedication to the country’s development and unity,” Ameh wrote.

Clark, born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political discourse. As a Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon’s military government, he was instrumental in formulating key policies that shaped governance.

Beyond politics, Clark was a fierce advocate for the Niger Delta region, championing its rights and economic interests. His activism led to the establishment of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), a group that fought for the region’s fair representation and resource control. However, his advocacy was not limited to the Niger Delta—he was a defender of all marginalized Nigerians, ensuring their voices were heard in the corridors of power.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late elder statesman, Ameh expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging the invaluable wisdom and mentorship Clark provided.

“On a personal note, I had the privilege of sharing a close relationship with Daddy. His wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support were invaluable to me and many others. His passing has left a void in our lives, but his legacy will continue to inspire us,” he said.

As Nigeria bids farewell to a leader, patriot, and champion of the people, Ameh emphasized the importance of upholding Clark’s values of equity, inclusion, and truth.

“Rest in peace, Edwin Clark. Your legacy will live on.”
