Breaking: Senate approves Rivers state of emergency declaration

The Senate has joined the House of Representatives in approving President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, exercising its constitutional powers under the amended 1999 Constitution.
With this approval, President Tinubu is authorized to implement emergency measures in the state, while the National Assembly retains the power to review the situation at any time, but no later than six months.
To ensure proper oversight, the National Assembly has established a joint committee of both chambers to monitor the administration of Rivers State throughout the emergency period.
Furthermore, the Senate has resolved to set up a mediation committee comprising eminent Nigerians to help de-escalate the ongoing political crisis in the state.
