Breaking: Tyson Fury retires from boxing

Published

on

The iconic boxing legend Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from the sport, bringing an iconic career to an end following consecutive losses to undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Speculation had been rife about Fury’s next move, with fans eagerly anticipating either a trilogy bout against Usyk or a long-awaited showdown with fellow Briton Anthony Joshua.

Instead, the ‘Gypsy King’ has chosen to bow out of the ring, leaving an indelible mark on the world of boxing.

“Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet,” Fury said in an Instagram video on Monday afternoon, addressing his millions of fans.

“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”

His video caption read, “Thanks, it’s been a blast thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy new year . Jesus is king now & forever.”

Fury’s first encounter with Usyk in May last year ended in heartbreak, as the Ukrainian powerhouse handed him his first professional loss via split decision, claiming undisputed heavyweight status.

In a December rematch, Fury fought valiantly but fell short again, this time losing by unanimous decision.

The defeats sparked widespread debate about Fury’s future, with many touting a blockbuster clash with Anthony Joshua as the natural next step.

Joshua himself expressed eagerness for the matchup, declaring on Sunday at The Ring Magazine Awards last week: “It has to happen this year.”

Despite the mounting anticipation, Fury has opted to step away from the sport he dominated for over a decade.

His decision caps a storied career marked by grit, charisma, and unforgettable moments inside and outside the ring, Eurosport reported on Monday.

Court charges PSG president for abuse of power

Published

on

French judicial authorities, Thursday, have charged the president of Paris Saint-Germain football club, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, with complicity in abuse of power.

Al-Khelaifi was charged on February 5 with complicity in the alleged buying of a vote and harming of freedom to vote over a switch in the voting of a Qatari investment fund on the board of the Lagardere Group in 2018, a judicial source added, with both sources asking not to be named.

The PSG chief, who has led the record 12-times French Ligue 1 champions since its 2011 takeover by Qatar Sports Investments with the dream of making the team Europe’s best, has faced several legal cases in recent years but always denied any wrongdoing.

“This file has absolutely and emphatically nothing to do with Nasser Al-Khelaifi, but as usual he will get dragged through a completely spurious process as a famous name, who is apparently responsible for anything and everything until everything quietly disappears without any grounds whatsoever in a few years,” said a source close to the Qatari, also asking not to be named.

Lagardere Group chief Arnaud Lagardere is suspected of having fraudulently used some 125 million euros ($129 million at today’s rates) of funds from the group for several years to fund his personal expenses.

The case against Al-Khelaifi, who is known in France as “NAK”, concerns a time in 2018 when there was a power struggle on the board between billionaire right-wing tycoon Vincent Bollore, who was allied to the Amber Capital investment fund, and France’s richest man Bernard Arnault the boss of the LVMH luxury goods firm who supported Arnaud Lagardere.

On April 24, 2018, Qatar Holding LLC, a subsidiary of the sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and the main shareholder of Lagardere Group positioned itself in favour of the resolutions of Amber Capital.

Arnaud Lagardere and his aides are accused of calling their contacts, including Al-Khelaifi in his capacity as a director of the QIA.

Five days after the first vote, the QIA changed its position and voted in favour of the resolutions put forward by Arnaud Lagardere.

The Lagardere Group was bought after a bitter battle at the end of November 2023 by media and publishing giant Vivendi, controlled by the family of Bollore.

A previous indictment against Al-Khelaifi for alleged corruption over Qatar’s bids for the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships was definitively annulled in mid-February 2023 by France’s Court of Cassation, which ruled that the French justice system was incompetent to prosecute him.

Parisian investigating magistrates are also probing Al-Khelaifi over accusations of the alleged kidnapping and sequestration in Qatar of Franco-Algerian lobbyist Tayeb Benabderrahmane.

Al-Khelaifi denies the accusations and has himself filed a complaint.

Atalanta announce €60m price tag on Lookman

Published

Italian Serie A leaders Atalanta have announced a €60m price tag on Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman amid growing interest from several European clubs.

The reigning African Footballer of The Year has been a subject of transfer speculation following his impressive performances for La Dea since joining from RB Leipzig for €9.35m in 2022.

According to journalist, Mirko Di Natale, Juventus have already made their first approach for the 27-year-old, who has amassed 43 goals and 23 assists in 96 appearances for the Bergamo outfit.

The forward’s stock rose significantly after his historic hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen, becoming the first player to achieve this feat in the competition’s final.

Despite Atalanta president Antonio Percassi’s earlier stance that the club would do “all they can” to keep their prized asset, he admitted the player “must not stay against his will.”

“After all, we have already replaced Zapata, Muriel and Gomez,” Percassi told Corriere della Sera last month.

The Nigeria international, who has continued his fine form this season with 14 goals and six assists across all competitions, is also attracting interest from Premier League clubs, with a potential return to England on the cards.

Lookman’s current contract with Atalanta runs until June 2026, but with just over a year remaining after this season, the Italian club may be forced to consider offers to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The former Everton man has particularly impressed in European competitions this term, recently scoring in Atalanta’s 3-2 UEFA Champions League defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, while also claiming three Man of The Match awards in the expanded UCL group stage.

England feels like home – Iheanacho

Published

on

The Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho, has said that he is excited to return to a familiar ground where he feels very much at home following his move to Middlesbrough in the January transfer window after a short spell in Spain with Sevilla.

The 28-year-old striker joined Middlesbrough on transfer deadline day after spending just six months with the La Liga outfit following his free transfer from Leicester City.

Iheanacho endured a difficult spell in Spain since joining Sevilla, failing to score in nine La Liga appearances. His only goals for the club came in the Copa del Rey, where he netted three times.

The former Manchester City forward, who helped Leicester win the Championship last season, expressed excitement about his return to England and the opportunity to work with Boro manager Michael Carrick.

“Obviously, there are good coaches here and a good team. I’ve played against the club a few times so I know it’s a really good club. I spoke to the manager and he was a really nice guy. We discussed everything from training to games and how he wants the club to move forward. It was clear that the goal was to get to the Premier League, which was good. I can’t wait to get started,” Iheanacho was quoted by Teesside Live.

“It was good to move away and experience a different environment. They produce a great atmosphere there and it’s another great club. I loved my experience there, it’s a great team. I’m here now though, and focused on what I can achieve here.”

After a difficult six-month spell in Spain, Iheanacho was relieved to return to England, where he made a name for himself, winning the English Community Shield, FA Cup, and the EFL Championship.

“It was good to move away and experience a different environment. They produce a great atmosphere there and it’s another great club. I loved my experience there, it’s a great team. I’m here now though, and focused on what I can achieve here,” he added.

“England feels like home now and I’m buzzing to get started. I had the experience of the Championship with Leicester last season and it was obviously a good one. I played against Middlesbrough as well, but didn’t manage to score! But I’ve played in the league and know how it is.”

“I think that will help me get started right away. I’m feeling ready to go. I’m not big on setting targets, but collectively, as a team, it is to get back to the Premier League. It’s one step at a time, but hopefully we get there. We’ve got a good group of lads here, a good team, and hopefully, we can work together to achieve that goal.”
