Cardinal John Onaiyekan faults Tinubu’s govt over palliative distribution

In a video that has gone viral, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, has made a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly its handling of palliative measures aimed at easing economic hardship.
The footage, captured during an interview, shows Onaiyekan expressing deep concern over the government’s approach, arguing that the term “palliative” itself is inappropriate and indicative of a deeper failure.
Onaiyekan begins by questioning the language used by the government, stating, “What we have been hearing the government saying they are rolling out palliatives.” He finds the term offensive, noting, “I hate to hear the word PALLIATIVE coming from a government.” He draws a comparison to medical practice, where palliatives are given to those who are dying, asking, “In medicine you give palliative to those who are about to die so that they do not die in pain.” He challenges the implication, questioning, “So are these palliatives meant to just keep, to help reduce the pain that they inflict on us but actually we’re going to die?”
The Cardinal’s critique extends to the execution of these measures, suggesting corruption undermines their intent. “It’s obvious when it comes to implementation good old elephant-in-the-room corruption is everything we are told that they’re doing,” he states, implying that the distribution of funds is not reaching those in need. He laments, “Palliatives here, there…and it’s obvious,” pointing to a lack of transparency and effectiveness.
Onaiyekan’s frustration is palpable as he notes, “Probably distributing money to some people and I look around have hardly heard anybody who said he got any of those monies.”
He also references recent public statements by the president, indicating a disconnect between policy and reality. “Recently the president came out public to say we want to make sure that no young man or woman drops out of university because of poverty,” he recounts, suggesting that such promises are not matched by action. The video captures Onaiyekan’s earnest delivery, his words resonating with a call for accountability and genuine support for the populace.
