A Chinese national seen in a circulated video showing Nigerian Mobile Police officers (MOPOL) receiving cash gifts has spoken out, clarifying the intent behind the gesture and dispelling claims of bribery.

The video, which went viral on various Nigeria news platforms, showed several officers lined up as they received cash from a group of Chinese men at a location believed to be in Kaduna State. Many Nigerians online interpreted the footage as evidence of an improper or illegal transaction, fueling criticism and concern over the professionalism of the security operatives involved.

However, one of the Chinese nationals featured in the video has now issued an official statement addressing the controversy.

According to the statement released on April 16, 2025, the act was simply a traditional expression of gratitude. He emphasized that there was no demand for money by the officers, nor was the cash given as a bribe or in exchange for favors.

“What you see in the video was a friendly and open interaction — nothing was done in secret and nothing inappropriate happened,” the Chinese national explained.

He noted that the cash gesture was rooted in Chinese culture, where appreciation is often shown to individuals who perform their duties exceptionally well.

“It’s a common Chinese tradition to show appreciation or kindness to people who are doing their jobs well — especially when they’ve been helpful or respectful,” he said. “That was all it was: a kind gesture, not a payoff or alleged bribe.”

He further expressed regret over the misunderstanding caused by the video’s circulation, offering a sincere apology to the Nigerian public.

“We are sorry about how this played out. Despite this experience, we remain committed to Nigeria. We feel secure and at home with the Nigerian police around,” he added.

The Chinese national also appealed for continued support and protection from security operatives for the safety and smooth operation of their business in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Police Force has not issued an official response regarding the clarifying statement from the Chinese national.
