Crisis hits Ondo Assembly as resignation rains

In a new political development, the Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Abayomi Akinruntan, has resigned from his position.
His resignation came alongside that of the House Majority Leader, Emmanuel Ogunmolasuyi, during Tuesday’s plenary session, held on June 3, 2025.
Both lawmakers are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and cited internal political tensions and disagreements over power-sharing arrangements within the state as the primary reasons for stepping down from their leadership roles.
Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1, and Ogunmolasuyi, representing Owo Constituency 1, announced their resignations before members of the Assembly during a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji.
Shortly after the announcement, the House moved swiftly to fill the vacant leadership positions. Ololade Gbegudu, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly.
In a related move, Olatunji Oshati, the representative of Ose Constituency, was appointed as the new Majority Leader of the House.
However, the Assembly leadership has yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter.
