Finland sets extradition date for Simon Ekpa

Finnish authorities have officially scheduled July 15, 2025, as the date for the extradition of Simon Ekpa to Nigeria, marking a significant breakthrough in months of diplomatic negotiations between both countries.
Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian political activist and self-acclaimed Biafran leader, was arrested in Lahti, Finland, in November 2024 following allegations of inciting violence and terrorism in Nigeria’s southeast region.
He has been widely linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and accused of using social media platforms to promote unrest, coordinate attacks on security personnel, and instigate sit-at-home orders that paralyzed economic activities.
According to Finnish police, Ekpa’s online activities created fear and chaos in southeastern Nigeria, prompting widespread protests and security crackdowns. Investigations also revealed his alleged involvement in mobilizing funds and orchestrating violent campaigns from abroad. Four others were arrested in connection with financing his activities.
The Nigerian government had been seeking Ekpa’s extradition for several months, eventually presenting compelling evidence that led to the Finnish court’s decision. Although Finland’s laws generally prohibit extradition of its citizens outside the European Union, an exception was made under an international legal framework signed by both countries.
On April 18, a Finnish court granted final approval for the extradition, confirming that Ekpa would be handed over to Nigerian authorities on July 15. Officials from both sides have assured that the process will adhere strictly to international legal standards.
