Labour Party warns against planned invasion of national secretariat

The Labour Party has issued a statement warning against a planned invasion of its national secretariat by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other groups.
According to the party, the NLC, along with the illegal Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee and National Transition Committee, are reportedly mobilizing members, hired thugs, and miscreants to invade the Labour Party’s national headquarters.
The invasion, which is allegedly funded by the Abia state government and a prominent party leader, is expected to commence on Monday, April 7, 2025.
The groups plan to break into the offices, steal sensitive documents, and vandalize party properties.
The Labour Party views this action as irresponsible and a sign of desperation from the NLC, which is barred from partisan politics. The party cites a recent Supreme Court judgment, which mandates that political parties resolve internal crises using internal mechanisms. The judgment does not grant the NLC or any other body the authority to take over the party’s leadership.
Barrister Julius Abure remains the National Chairman of the Labour Party, validly elected in March 2024. The Labour Party urges security agencies to prevent any breach of peace and apprehend those behind the planned invasion.
The statement was signed by Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, National Secretary of the Labour Party. “We view this action as irresponsible and an evidence of desperation on the NLC,” he said. “We urge security agencies to prevent any breach of peace and apprehend those behind the planned invasion.”
The Labour Party has warned that any attempt to forcefully usurp the present leadership will be resisted. The party has called on the attention of security agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure that any activity that is capable of breaching the peace of the Federal Capital Territory is nipped in the bud.
