Makinde speaks on defection

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared unwavering loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing recent defections within the party as insignificant in the face of the real issues confronting Nigerians.
Speaking during the inauguration of the PDP’s newly elected South West zonal executive in Ibadan, Governor Makinde reassured party loyalists that he has no intention of leaving the PDP, despite ongoing political realignments by some members, including governors.
“Don’t worry about who is leaving. The real problem Nigerians face today is hunger. When hunger defects to APC, then we can begin to worry,” Makinde quipped, drawing laughter and applause from the crowd.
He emphasized that it is the masses, not politicians hopping from one party to another, who will ultimately determine the direction of the 2027 general elections. “The people will speak at the ballot box, and it is their pain, not party-switching, that will shape the future,” he added.
The governor praised the PDP’s resilience since losing federal power in 2015, noting that the party has remained intact, with its internal structure and democratic practices still functional. He contrasted this with the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he said barely holds internal congresses or meetings.
Makinde also promised full support for the new zonal leadership and pledged to work hand-in-hand with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to reposition the PDP in the South West.
Governor Adeleke, in his remarks, called for unity, peace, and inclusiveness within the party, urging the new executives to focus on reconciliation and growth.
The newly sworn-in PDP National Vice Chairman (South West), Kamorudeen Ajisafe, echoed this sentiment, promising to lead efforts to mend divisions, strengthen the party’s base, and position the South West as a key region in PDP’s quest to reclaim the presidency in 2027.
Also speaking at the event, former Ogun State governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, thanked Makinde and Adeleke for their leadership and urged members to remain focused and united.
The inauguration was graced by prominent PDP figures from across the South West, signaling renewed momentum for the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
