Man City announce Bernardo Silva’s departure

Manchester City Bernardo Silva is set depart the club this summer, with the club having informed the Portuguese midfielder that the time has come for a parting of ways.
The 30-year-old, who has been a key figure at the Etihad since 2017, is hoping to secure a return to boyhood club Benfica, with efforts already underway to ensure the move happens as smoothly as possible.
His desire to return to Lisbon has been no secret, and City’s decision appears to reflect a wider shift in strategy as they begin to reshape their squad following a difficult 2024/25 campaign. The news comes on the heels of confirmation that Kevin De Bruyne will also depart at the end of the season, signalling the end of an era for two of the club’s most influential midfielders.
While Silva played a central role in City’s treble-winning season in 2022/23, many observers have noted that his creative influence has waned in recent months, particularly within Pep Guardiola’s increasingly rigid tactical setup. With fresh talent waiting in the wings, City appear ready to usher in a new phase.
Benfica, for their part, are keen to bring Silva home, but the move is far from straightforward. The midfielder’s £50 million release clause poses a significant financial hurdle for the Portuguese side.
However, agent Jorge Mendes is reportedly working on a potential deal, which may involve other players being used to offset the cost.
