The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to frozen food dealers, urging them to cease the sale and distribution of unregistered and prohibited products in Nigeria.
This announcement was made during a one-day sensitization event held on Friday at Kado Fish Market, Abuja—the largest fish market in North-Central Nigeria. The program aimed to promote compliance with regulations, ensuring food safety and supporting local production.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director-General, represented by Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the FCT Directorate, reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health by clamping down on the illegal production and sale of unregistered frozen food products.
“The importation and distribution of banned frozen chicken, turkey, and fish must stop to encourage the growth of local farmers and producers,” Adeyeye stated. She further emphasized the importance of proper storage and distribution practices to maintain food quality and safety, especially during the festive season.
Adeyeye also urged market traders to prioritize purchasing NAFDAC-registered frozen products while cautioning violators of strict enforcement measures against the sale of banned items.
The Chairman of the Frozen Food Sellers Association at Kado Fish Market, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, expressed his support for NAFDAC’s initiative and assured the agency of the association’s compliance with regulatory policies. However, he appealed for fairness and compassion in enforcement actions.
In addition to frozen food regulations, NAFDAC also conducted inspections of water production facilities across the Federal Capital Territory to ensure compliance with hygienic standards and good manufacturing practices. These inspections aim to uphold the safety of sachet and table water production for public consumption.
