Nigerians drag MTN to court over alleged rapid data depletion

A group of Nigerians have reportedly launched a class action lawsuit against leading telecom provider, MTN Nigeria, over claims of rapid data depletion and suspicious data top-ups.

The move gained massive traction after a viral post surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), where a user declared interest in joining a legal battle against the network.

“Too happy & available to join a class action against MTN Nigeria,” the user posted, alongside a screenshot showing unexplained data usage.

In response, a Google Form was circulated to collate names of affected users. The form stated: “This class action lawsuit addresses the victims of MTN, a network provider, who have experienced issues with false data top-ups and rapid data drainage.”

It further alleged that Nigerians are spending excessively on data without receiving corresponding value, especially when compared to mobile data costs and usage patterns in other countries.

The viral post quickly drew hundreds of responses, with many Nigerians sharing similar frustrations and pledging support for the lawsuit.

As of now, MTN Nigeria has not issued an official statement addressing the class action claims.
