Outrage as tenant allegedly faces eviction from renovated shop

A viral video showing a distraught Nigerian woman lamenting her eviction from a shop she claims to have renovated with millions of naira has raised many unanswered questions on social media over tenant rights and landlord power dynamics in Nigeria.
In the emotionally charged clip, the woman, speaking in a mix of English and Igbo is seen standing in front of a damaged storefront, expressing anguish over what she described as an unjust and financially crippling experience. According to her, the landlord forced her to vacate the premises shortly after she had invested heavily in building and furnishing the space.
“I spent millions of naira to fix up this place,” she cried out, pointing to the ruined shop. She said the space had housed both a barbing salon and a boutique, which she set up from scratch. However, her efforts were allegedly met with betrayal when the landlord asked her to leave so he could re-rent the now-renovated space to someone else.
“This stupid, useless man told me to leave the shop so he can rent it to another person,” she said in frustration, her voice trembling with rage and disbelief. Footage from the scene showed scattered items and an emptied-out interior, reflecting the physical and emotional toll of the incident.
“I’ve taken everything,” she added, indicating she had removed her belongings but was still reeling from the loss. “After all the money I spent…” she repeated, her words echoing the financial and emotional devastation.
The video has created a firestorm of reactions online. Many Nigerians sympathized with the woman, calling out the widespread lack of legal protections for tenants in similar situations. Others, however, questioned the terms of her tenancy and whether any formal agreement had been breached.
As of the time of this report, the landlord in question has not made any public comment.
