Panic as fire razes popular Nigerian hospital

A fire incident on Thursday sent shockwaves through the General Hospital in Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, after parts of the facility’s three-storey building went up in flames.
The fire, which erupted during the day, sparked chaos among patients, hospital staff, and residents, with many fearing for the safety of those inside — particularly nursing mothers and their newborns.
Videos shared widely on social media captured the terrifying moments thick plumes of smoke billowed from the hospital building. Onlookers could be seen raising the alarm and calling for urgent intervention from emergency services.
One concerned Facebook user, Modinat Melemuku, who filmed the scene, posted: “Happening now at General Hospital Ifako-Ijaiye, College Road. Please repost. Help is needed.”
As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed casualties, and the extent of damage remains unclear.
