Rodri’s Ballon d’Or a turning point for midfielders – Pedri

Barcelona midfielder Pedri believes Rodri’s recent Ballon d’Or triumph has shifted perceptions about who can win football’s most prestigious individual honour.
The 22-year-old says the award, long dominated by goalscoring icons like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, is now open to players who dictate the rhythm of the game.
“Since Rodri won the Ballon d’Or, it has become clear that a player who controls the midfield and dictates the tempo of the game can win this award,” Pedri remarked, pointing to the Manchester City man’s recognition as a landmark moment for midfielders.
Though the Ballon d’Or remains a personal dream for the young Spaniard, he insists that his current focus lies on team objectives. “Right now, my focus is on team trophies,” he added—an outlook that aligns perfectly with Barcelona’s current form.
The Catalan side are enjoying an 18-match unbeaten run across all competitions, emerging as genuine contenders for a historic treble.
The midfielder’s comments reflect both ambition and maturity as he balances long-term personal aspirations with the collective spirit driving his team’s resurgence under Hansi Flick.
