SDP chairman speaks on closed-door meeting with El-Rufai, Atiku allies

The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has addressed the speculation surrounding a recent closed-door meeting with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and political allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The meeting, held at the SDP national secretariat, sparked widespread discussions about a potential political merger ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, in his response, Gabam clarified that the gathering was part of broader conversations focused on fostering national stability and exploring collaborative efforts for a better Nigeria.
“There has been no official declaration from El-Rufai or any other individual about formally joining the SDP,” Gabam said. “We are open to discussions and negotiations aimed at improving Nigeria’s future. It’s not about political parties but about building a prosperous nation.”
He emphasized that the meeting was just one of many similar engagements with dignitaries from various political backgrounds. According to Gabam, these dialogues are geared toward sharing constructive advice with the current administration to avoid national crises that could negatively impact citizens.
“Our responsibility as a political entity is to ensure stability,” he noted. “When the time is right, we will make our collective decisions known. We will hold an official press conference to unveil any agreed-upon plans.”
Gabam described the meeting as part of the SDP’s ongoing strategy to align with like-minded individuals who are committed to the country’s progress. He reiterated that the party remains focused on providing responsible leadership, advocating for peace, economic prosperity, and political stability.
“The SDP is rooted in history as a responsible party. We prioritize Nigeria above all else and will continue to act as a constructive opposition, just as APC did before coming to power,” he concluded.
Gabam’s remarks have piqued curiosity among political observers, who await further developments as 2027 approaches.
