Sevilla appoint new head coach

Sevilla confirmed Matias Almeyda as their next coach.
The 51-year-old Argentine has signed for the next three seasons, until 2028, after finishing his time at Greek club AEK Athens.
Matías Almeyda is the new coach of Sevilla. On Monday, the Andalusian club confirmed the signing of the 51-year-old Argentinian, who has signed a contract that binds him for the next three seasons, until 30 June 2028.
The former midfielder is a familiar face at the club, although much time has passed since then. Almeyda played for Sevilla in the 1996-97 season, his breakthrough in European football before moving on to Lazio, Parma and Inter Milan. Now he returns as coach to one of the busiest benches in La Liga.
With him, there are now seven coaches who have been in the job since Sevilla sacked Julen Lopetegui in October 2022. Sampaoli, Mendilibar, Diego Alonso, Quique Sanchez Flores, Luis García Pimienta and finally, Joaquín Caparrós, who tried to put out the fire as best he could and saved the team from relegation ‘in extremis’.
Almeyda arrives in the Andalusian capital on the back of a three-year spell at AEK Athens in Greece, where he won a league title and a cup. Last season, his team finished fourth behind Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and PAOK. The arrival of the Argentinian no longer bears the stamp of Victor Orta, but that of Antonio Cordon, who will try to revitalise a project that has been in decline for several years.
