A war of words has erupted between former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his successor, Governor Uba Sani, following the latter’s remarks about past politicians and his praise for President Bola Tinubu.

During an interview on TVC, Governor Sani criticized some politicians who, according to him, were only interested in power rather than governance when they held office. He stated, “Most of these politicians that came out and say they are coming as coalition, they are politicians that were in government only less than two years ago. What did they do when they were in government? They were only fighting for power, not because they could do anything better.”

He further declared that no Nigerian president has upheld democratic principles like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying, “No president in the history of Nigeria has really practiced democracy like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Reacting to these statements, El-Rufai took to X to issue a sharp response, insinuating that the Kaduna governor’s loyalty to Tinubu might be linked to financial incentives from the Federal Government. He wrote, “Every day I see this governor embarrassingly and sycophantically rambling, I used to wonder why? However, confirming that Federal Government ‘reimbursements, interventions, and grants’ in excess of ₦150bn have been given selectively to Kaduna by Tinubu in the last 18 months, now explains everything.”

The former governor also referenced a famous Sherlock Holmes quote, “When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is the truth,” hinting at what he believes to be the real reason behind Sani’s staunch defense of Tinubu’s administration.

El-Rufai further stated that while defending Tinubu’s policies was expected, the people of Kaduna would ultimately decide the truth when the time comes. “By all means, defend Asiwaju for the conditional cash transfer. Asiwaju has earned it, coming from you. The people of Kaduna State will judge at the right time and place. Have a nice day.”
