What to know about newly appointed NIS public relations officer, ACI AS Akinlabi

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has appointed Assistant Comptroller of Immigration (ACI) AS Akinlabi as its new Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO). Here are key facts about him:

1. Background and Education

ACI Akinlabi hails from Ibarapa Central Local Government Area in Oyo State.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Ilorin.

He also earned a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria.

2. Professional Experience

Akinlabi joined the Nigeria Immigration Service in December 2006.

He has served in several key departments at the Service Headquarters, including:

Accounts and Finance

Protocol

Training and Staff Development

Passports and Travel Documents

He was a pioneer staff member of the NIS Contact Centre.

He later became the Second-in-Command at the SERVICOM Unit, an important department for public relations.

Before his appointment as PRO, he was an Immigration Attaché at the Nigerian Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands.

3. New Role and Responsibilities

Akinlabi takes over from Deputy Comptroller of Immigration KT Udo, who has been redeployed as the Passport Control Officer for Akwa Ibom State.

His appointment was included in the Senior Staff Posting Order released on January 31, 2025.

His role will involve handling the public image of the NIS, engaging with stakeholders, and communicating policies and developments.

The NIS believes his wealth of experience will help promote and sustain the Service’s global reputation.

His appointment takes immediate effect, and he is expected to bring fresh ideas to the NIS public relations department.
