Reno Omokri defends Oyedepo over Rolls Royce birthday gift criticism

Former presidential aide and social media commentator, Reno Omokri, has come to the defense of Bishop David Oyedepo after some criticized the purchase of a Rolls Royce for the Living Faith Church founder as a birthday gift.
In a post shared on his X handle, Omokri likened the backlash to the biblical account of Mary anointing Jesus with expensive perfume, which was condemned by Judas Iscariot. Omokri argued that, just as Jesus rebuked Judas for criticizing Mary, those attacking Oyedepo’s gift are missing the point.
“The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me,” Omokri quoted Jesus from the Bible in Matthew 26:11, suggesting that the critics should focus on alleviating poverty themselves instead of condemning the church’s gesture.
Addressing those who feel the gift was insensitive given Nigeria’s current economic struggles, Omokri highlighted Oyedepo’s extensive charitable efforts. According to him, the welfare budget of Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church Worldwide surpasses that of most Nigerian states, barring Lagos.
“If you feel so strongly about people experiencing poverty, then spend your money on feeding, housing, and educating them,” Omokri wrote, reminding critics that the church has done more for the poor than many state governments.
Omokri further argued that Oyedepo, who has been dedicated to service and charity for decades, deserves to be celebrated lavishly, adding that “he deserves even more Rolls Royces.”

His defense of Oyedepo sparked both support and opposition, as some agreed with Omokri’s comparison, while others felt the gesture was excessive given the nation’s economic hardship.
As the conversation continues, Oyedepo’s supporters and critics remain divided over whether such an extravagant gift was appropriate during these challenging times.
