I don’t want to be remembered for ‘the fights’ – Obaseki

Outgoing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has shared a key sentiment on how he wishes to be remembered as he prepares to leave office.
During the commissioning of the new Airport Road Parks and Gardens in Benin City on Friday evening, Obaseki remarked that he hopes his legacy will focus on achievements rather than political conflicts.
When asked by journalists about his preferred legacy after eight years in office, Obaseki responded simply, “Certainly not for the fights.” His tenure has been marked by notable political battles, especially towards the end of his first term, including a well-publicized fallout with his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole. This dispute ultimately led to Obaseki’s departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his re-election under the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.
Despite his victory, Obaseki faced persistent challenges from within the PDP, particularly from members of the Legacy Group, led by Chief Dan Orbih, which some believe hindered his ability to produce a preferred successor.
At the commissioning, Obaseki named the newly inaugurated park “Prestige Park” in reference to the nearby Prestige Hotel. He shared that his administration has developed a sustainable model to maintain the park, which will be funded by revenue generated from local billboards. Additionally, he noted that the neighboring Military Hospital and Prestige Hotel will provide security and community support for the park’s upkeep.
