Osun: NLC gives new order to LG workers

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all local government workers in the state to withdraw their services due to the ongoing political unrest.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 24, 2025, Osun NLC Chairman, Christopher Arapasopo, reaffirmed the union’s stance, citing concerns for workers’ safety amid the crisis.
“The Osun NLC strongly affirms its earlier directive for all Local Government Area workers to withdraw their services due to the political upheaval at their workplaces while continuing to pray for peace in the state,” the statement read.
It further emphasized that workers’ safety remains a priority, adding, “We will not allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.”
The crisis erupted last Monday when members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed over control of local government secretariats. The violence resulted in six deaths and several injuries, according to police reports.
Despite concerns, the state government proceeded with the local government elections on Saturday, February 22, 2025, against the advice of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who had cautioned Governor Ademola Adeleke against conducting the polls.
The Osun NLC reiterated its commitment to protecting workers’ rights, stating, “We shall not be intimidated by desperate attempts to silence us. We stand firm in upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law.”
