Nigerian varsity shuts down amid security issues

Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JoSTM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, has announced a one-week closure following a security crisis on campus.
The decision comes in the wake of a shocking incident on Tuesday night, where four female students were abducted by unidentified gunmen.
The students were reportedly on their way to a lecture hall for night study around 8:30 p.m. when the attackers struck, taking them to an undisclosed location.
The abduction has sparked widespread concern among students, leading the university’s management to take immediate action. In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Registrar, Dr. John David, expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families. He announced a mid-semester break and directed all students to vacate their hostels by 4:00 p.m. on February 26, 2025.
As part of its response, the university has postponed an Inaugural Lecture that was originally scheduled for the same day. Officials have assured the public that security agencies have been notified and are actively working to secure the release of the kidnapped students.
The university strongly condemned the attack and reassured students and staff that security measures are being intensified to prevent future incidents. Authorities urge the university community to remain calm as efforts continue to resolve the crisis.
