Calls grow for Akpabio to step down over sexual harassment allegations

Pressure is mounting on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step down following allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a strongly worded statement, political analyst Bello Elmikado Drixxo called for Akpabio’s immediate resignation to allow for an impartial investigation into the allegations. According to Drixxo, this is not the first time the Senate President has faced such accusations, recalling a similar controversy during his tenure as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, when the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) also accused him of harassment and intimidation—claims that were never fully investigated.
Drixxo criticized Akpabio’s leadership, describing it as “corrosive, toxic, and brutish.” He argued that allowing him to remain in office while facing serious allegations not only damages the integrity of the National Assembly but also sends the wrong signal to Nigerians and the international community.
“In a sane society, Akpabio should step down immediately to clear his name instead of dragging the Senate into public disgrace,” Drixxo stated. “No amount of damage control can erase the stain he has inflicted on himself.”
He further called on well-meaning senators to take action and ensure that the National Assembly prioritizes governance over personal scandals.
“The Nigerian people are suffering, yet the Senate, which should be focused on addressing national issues, is being distracted by this unfortunate drama,” Drixxo added.
The allegations against Akpabio have sent the online platform on frenzy, with calls for transparency in handling the case. Meanwhile, Akpabio has yet to officially respond to the growing demands for his resignation.
