Breaking: Obasa takes first action after re-emerging as Lagos speaker

Following the returned of the Lagos State House of Assembly speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has called for an indefinite adjournment of the plenary session.
Obasa, who was Impeached about a month ago, expressed deep gratitude to prominent political figures, including Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, as well as the leaders of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), for their role in his reinstatement.
His re-emergence comes after the resignation of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who briefly held the speakership after Obasa’s controversial impeachment. Meranda, who was elected Speaker on January 13, 2025, stepped down on Monday.
It can be recalled that the Lagos Assembly on January 13, 2025, impeached Obasa, the lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, as its Speaker by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House. The lawmakers accused him of misconduct and other offences.
He was removed while he was away on a foreign trip. In his place, Meranda was elected as the new Speaker.
Following his return, on February 17 security operatives clashed with legislative staff at the Assembly Complex. That same day, 36 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda and voted to adjourn sitting indefinitely.
There was also a drama on February 27, when Obasa made a surprise appearance at the Lagos Assembly Complex. Flanked by a heavy security detail, he walked confidently into the hallowed chambers, marking his first return to the Assembly since his impeachment.
