River Assembly reacts to Tinubu’s emergency rule

The Rivers State House of Assembly has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in the state, despite acknowledging that it was not the solution they initially sought.
Speaking on behalf of the Assembly, Speaker Martin Chike Amaewhule accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of causing the crisis through his continuous disregard for court rulings and unconstitutional actions. According to him, Fubara deliberately obstructed the Assembly from carrying out its legislative duties, leading to governance challenges in the state.
While noting that the emergency rule was not their preferred course of action, Amaewhule assured Tinubu of the lawmakers’ full cooperation with the newly appointed Sole Administrator. He pledged that the Assembly would provide all necessary support to ensure the smooth running of the state under the emergency arrangement.
The Speaker also called on Rivers residents to remain calm and back the new leadership, urging them to embrace peace as the state transitions under the new directive. He expressed gratitude for their prayers and understanding, emphasizing the need for unity during this period.
In related development, reports reveal that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is reportedly being held under house arrest at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
According to People’s Gazette, a contingent of heavily armed soldiers has surrounded the premises, restricting the movement of the governor and his family.
