Mbappe a doubt for Copa del Rey final – Report

The Real Madrid medical team have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe has sustained a sprain to his right ankle, but the injury is not considered serious.

Although the forward will be handled with care over the coming days, his participation in the Copa del Rey final does not appear to be in jeopardy.

The Frenchman underwent tests on Friday which corroborated the initial diagnosis by Real Madrid’s medical team—he is suffering from a mild sprain in his right ankle.

The club remain optimistic that he will recover in time for the crucial clash against Barcelona, though his availability will ultimately depend on how his condition evolves over the next fortnight.

Mbappe sustained the injury during Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday. In the 75th minute, following a challenge with England international Declan Rice, the forward twisted his ankle awkwardly and was forced to leave the pitch.

At the time of his substitution, the score was 1-1 on the night and 1-4 on aggregate in favour of the Gunners. Mbappe headed straight down the tunnel and was visibly unable to put any weight on his right foot, sparking concern among Madrid’s coaching staff and supporters alike.

He was already due to miss Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Athletic Club due to suspension following his red card against Alaves. His absence will now also extend to Wednesday’s visit to Getafe as part of his recovery process.

With Madrid now out of the Champions League and trailing Barcelona by four points in La Liga, the Copa del Rey final has taken on even greater significance.

The club’s medical staff will monitor the player’s progress closely, but there is cautious confidence that he will be fit to feature in what could prove a pivotal match in the club’s season.
