EFCC breaks silence after viral video shows Tompolo allegedly abusing Naira

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally reacted to a viral video showing ex-militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency by spraying bundles of naira at a public event.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the anti-graft agency wrote: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer. #EFCCNigeria.”

This public statement comes less than 24 hours after the video surfaced online, drawing attention and outrage among Nigerians. In the now-viral clip, Tompolo is seen flinging naira notes in celebration, an act that contravenes Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse of the national currency.

Before the EFCC’s response, many netizens had already begun calling out the agency, accusing it of selective enforcement and turning a blind eye because of Tompolo’s influence and status in the Niger Delta.

With the EFCC’s latest statement, attention now shifts to whether the agency will follow through with an investigation and possibly prosecute the former militant leader, or if this will be yet another case swept under the carpet.
