Family announces burial plans for Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu burial

The family of late Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles captain and coach, Christian Chukwu, has officially announced that his burial will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The burial announcement date was officially made on Monday in Enugu, Christian Chukwu’s home state, as preparations commence for what is expected to be a national celebration of the life and legacy of one of Nigeria’s most revered football figures.
In addition to the Enugu burial ceremony, a special memorial event will be held in Lagos—a city where Chukwu made significant strides during his illustrious career. The Lagos memorial is aimed at giving fans, former teammates, football administrators, and associates an opportunity to pay their respects, especially those who may be unable to travel to Enugu.
Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, remains one of the most influential figures in Nigerian football history. Fondly known as ‘Chairman,’ he captained the Nigerian national team to its historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980. Years later, he returned to the team as head coach, guiding the Super Eagles through several international competitions.
