Netizens react as report claims Atiku offered Peter Obi VP slot

A reported alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has created different opinions among Nigerians online, with reactions pouring in from across the political spectrum.

According to reports, Atiku has allegedly offered Obi the vice presidential slot in a proposed joint ticket under a single-term agreement, as part of efforts to form a formidable opposition coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. The offer was reportedly made earlier this year during a private meeting in the United Kingdom.

The proposal, which also suggests Atiku will serve only one term and hand over to Obi in 2031, comes amid ongoing coalition talks between opposition figures including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and others. While both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) are still battling internal crises, the camps of Atiku and Obi are reportedly considering alternative political platforms like the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

2027: Atiku offers Peter Obi VP’s role amid coalition

However, the development has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media. Some netizens expressed support for the alliance, urging Peter Obi to accept the VP role if it would help dislodge the current APC-led administration. For them, the primary goal is to unite and rescue Nigeria from what they describe as “clueless leadership.”

Others, however, were less enthusiastic. Many of Obi’s loyalists believe the former Anambra governor, who gained massive youth support in the last election, should lead the coalition himself and not play second fiddle again to Atiku, as he did in 2019. These critics argue that Atiku, having contested multiple times without success, should step aside and allow a younger, more energetic leader to take the reins.

Despite the swirling reports, key figures close to Obi—including the National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, Yunusa Tanko—have denied any knowledge of the VP offer. “He has not shared with me any of this particular issue,” Tanko said, casting doubt on how far the agreement has progressed.

Still, political observers say the idea of an Atiku-Obi reunion isn’t far-fetched. In 2019, both men ran together on the PDP platform and lost to then-President Muhammadu Buhari. Whether a renewed ticket would fare better in 2027 remains uncertain, especially with the APC strengthening its hold across several regions.
