Peter Obi reacts to Ganduje’s resignation

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has commended the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a “timely and honourable” move that other ailing leaders in Nigeria should emulate.
In a statement posted on his social media platforms, Obi praised Ganduje for choosing to prioritise his health over politics, saying the decision reflects wisdom and integrity.
“I must commend Dr. Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else,” Obi wrote. “With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.”
But beyond the commendation, the former Anambra State governor appeared to subtly challenge other political office holders whose health conditions have reportedly affected their performance in office. A veiled jab many commentators believe was directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” Obi said.
He stressed that the country’s current realities demand leaders who are “physically and mentally fit” and not distracted by “medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments.”
“At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments. These things are taking a serious toll on our development,” he added.
While Obi did not mention any names, social media users were quick to link his remarks to President Tinubu, who has faced scrutiny over frequent overseas trips and lingering health concerns.
Obi ended his statement by praying for Ganduje and reaffirming his signature phrase: “May God Almighty grant Dr. Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement. Indeed, a new Nigeria is POssible.”
