Molestation of minors alarming — NSCDC FCT Commandant vows crackdown

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has condemned the rising cases of child molestation and other gender-based crimes, declaring the Corps’ unwavering resolve to work with relevant agencies to protect minors and ensure offenders face the full weight of the law.
Speaking on Monday at the Command’s headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, while receiving students of ECWA Hill Academy, Maitama, on an educational excursion, Dr. Odumosu did not mince words in expressing concern.
“It is sad to say that currently we are handling a case of a father molesting his nine-year-old daughter,” the Commandant revealed. “We are concerned about this insanity being perpetrated against minors, especially young girls, and we are set — through our Gender Unit and in collaboration with other relevant agencies — to make sure these incidents are not treated with kid gloves.”
Dr. Odumosu stated that in addition to the Corps’ core mandate of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, the NSCDC is actively involved in gender protection, anti-human trafficking, and child rights advocacy.
“Apart from safeguarding national infrastructure, we have dedicated units within the Command, such as the Anti-Trafficking and Gender Units, that intervene to protect children from sexual abuse, trafficking, and even organ harvesting,” he explained.
In a passionate address to the students, the Commandant urged vigilance and boldness in speaking out against abuse, regardless of who the perpetrator may be.
“Be wary of people — even your parents — who touch you inappropriately,” he cautioned. “You must be bold enough to speak up when such things happen. Your safety is a priority, and silence only empowers the abuser.”
Dr. Odumosu also used the occasion to educate the students on the history and evolution of the Corps. He said the NSCDC started as a voluntary organization known as the Lagos Civil Defence Committee during the Nigerian Civil War in 1967. Its purpose then was to educate citizens on how to protect themselves from crossfire during the conflict.
“The Corps became a statutory paramilitary agency through an Act in 2003, which was later amended in 2007,” he explained. “Today, we are an agency empowered to carry out wide-ranging security responsibilities.”
Encouraging the students to remain focused on their academics, the Commandant said:
“Take your studies seriously. Be diligent, be studious, and aim to make your parents and the nation proud. You are the leaders of tomorrow.”
He also reassured them that their safety in school remains a top priority for the Corps under the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative.
“We will continue to ensure the safety of both students and teachers across the FCT. Your learning environment must be safe, and we are fully committed to that,” he affirmed.
Speaking on behalf of the school, Mr. Angbulu Joshua, a tutor at ECWA Hill Academy and leader of the delegation, expressed appreciation to the NSCDC for the warm reception and the eye-opening experience.
“We are truly impressed by the professionalism and achievements of the Corps. This visit has given our students valuable firsthand insight into the vital role the NSCDC plays in national security,” he said.
The visit concluded with a tour of various units within the Command, where the students received tutorials and demonstrations on the functions and responsibilities of different departments.
