A case of broken promises in Cross River Central, by Okoi Obono-Obla

A genuine leader must always uphold truthfulness and never deceive those who have entrusted them with a mandate. Leadership is not merely about holding office—it is about representation, accountability, and responsiveness to the concerns of the people.

In mid-February 2025, the issue of illegal miners and their foreign backers infiltrating Mkpani Agoi Council Ward in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State was a matter of grave concern. The senator representing the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State in the Nigerian Senate—who hails from the region most affected by this crisis—granted an interview on an FM radio station in Calabar, which I closely followed.

In the interview, the senator assured listeners that he had tabled a motion before the Senate regarding the pressing issue and that it would be formally moved on the Senate floor within a week. His statement was met with relief by concerned citizens who anticipated immediate action. However, nearly three months later, there has been no sign of the promised motion. The senator has remained silent on the matter, failing to provide updates or any indication of his stance.

In contrast, Rt. Honourable Alex Egbona, representing Abi Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, demonstrated principled leadership by promptly moving a motion in early February 2025 to bring national attention to the crisis. His swift action embodies the essence of true representation—ensuring that the voice of his constituents is heard and their concerns addressed.

It is unconscionable for an elected representative to engage in deceitful tactics, misleading the very people who rely on him to be their voice in government. If the senator was this indifferent about a dire situation affecting his home region, one must wonder what his response would be if other areas of his senatorial district faced similar devastation.

Leadership demands honesty, responsiveness, and dedication to the welfare of the people. The absence of action where it is most needed is a betrayal of trust and a failure in governance.
