All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied allegations by Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, that its spokesperson, Felix Morka, threatened his life.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, Felix Morka, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, described Obi’s claim as “malicious, false, and reprehensible.” Morka accused Obi of fabricating the allegation in a bid to attract public sympathy and stoke political tensions.
The controversy began when Obi, in a post on his verified X account, alleged that his New Year message had triggered threats against him and his family. According to Obi, Morka had warned during a television interview that Obi would “face consequences” for his remarks.
However, Morka refuted the claim, insisting that his comments during the Arise TV interview on January 4, 2025, were misinterpreted. He provided a transcript of the interview, emphasizing that his statement was taken out of context.
In the interview, Morka criticized Obi’s economic policies, labeling them “irrational” and accusing him of failing to deliver tangible results during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
Responding to accusations that his remarks were excessive, Morka had said, “Obi has crossed the line so many times, and I think that, at this point, he has coming to him whatever he gets. He should manage it.”
Morka clarified that his comment referred solely to Obi’s political conduct and criticisms, not to any physical threat. “Nothing in that statement constitutes or suggests a threat to Obi or anyone else,” Morka stated.
The APC spokesperson accused Obi of weaponizing misinformation, claiming that Obi often incites hostility against opposing views and tolerates online harassment by his supporters. He alleged that Obi’s followers have frequently bullied and issued threats against political opponents, including elder statesmen.
Morka also criticized Obi’s policy positions, accusing him of hypocrisy for attacking the Tinubu administration over reforms he once supported, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.
“Obi must stop misleading Nigerians with false narratives and start offering constructive criticism based on facts,” Morka said.
The APC called on Obi to withdraw his accusations and issue a public apology. Morka also warned that he would explore legal options to defend his reputation if Obi failed to retract the claims.
