Benue gospel community mourns as renowned singer dies at 53

Benue State has been thrown into mourning following the death of celebrated gospel singer, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem.
The gospel icon passed away at the age of 53.
New Jerusalem, known for turning traditional Tiv Swange music into a powerful tool for preaching the gospel, left a legacy that cut across faith and culture.
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group. Speaking emotionally, Ortom described Ikyereve as a man of deep spiritual conviction whose music touched lives both locally and internationally.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That connection led me to seek a personal relationship with him. We became like family.”
The former governor recalled seeing one of New Jerusalem’s songs being used during a music training session in Australia, led by a fellow Tiv man. The moment, he said, was proof of the far-reaching influence of the late artist’s gospel message.
Ortom also offered prayers for the grieving family and assured them of his continued support, promising not to abandon them after the burial. “I will stand with you all the way,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the deceased’s elder brother, expressed gratitude to Ortom for standing by them during the singer’s illness and after his passing. He also revealed that one of the late singer’s sons was named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s kindness.
Prayers during the visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo of the Brethren Prayer Group.
Israel Ikyereve is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and several relatives.
His burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
