Breaking: NNPC speaks on Porthacourt Refinery shutdown claims

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has dismissed recent reports alleging the shutdown of the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, describing them as false and misleading.
In a press release issued on Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, confirmed that the refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, remains fully operational. According to Soneye, the claims of a shutdown were unfounded and aimed at misleading Nigerians.
“We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false, as the refinery is fully operational, as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC,” the statement read.
Soneye added that preparations for the day’s loading operations were underway at the refinery and urged the public to disregard the circulating claims. He further alleged that the false reports were part of a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to create artificial fuel scarcity and exploit Nigerians.
“Members of the public are advised to discountenance such reports as they are the figments of the imagination of those who want to create artificial scarcity and rip-off Nigerians,” the statement emphasized.

The Port Harcourt Refinery, which underwent a $1.5 billion rehabilitation and was reopened in a high-profile ceremony two months ago, has been under scrutiny following allegations of operational inconsistencies. However, NNPC’s latest statement seeks to reassure Nigerians that the facility continues to function as intended.
NNPC’s response comes amid growing public concern over the availability of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the operations of the country’s refineries. The corporation reiterated its commitment to ensuring consistent fuel supply and transparency in its operations.
