Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms to hit multiple states, see full list

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh alert warning Nigerians to brace for three days of thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country beginning from on Monday.

In a weather advisory released from its Abuja office, NiMet outlined that early morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of the northern region including Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna. The stormy weather is projected to persist into the afternoon and evening across states such as Borno, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Gombe.

In the central region, the forecast indicates rainfall in the early hours over Abuja, Niger, and Plateau, with thunderstorm activity spreading to Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa later in the day.

Residents in the southern part of Nigeria should also expect cloudy skies and light rain in areas like Lagos, Ogun, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom on Monday morning. As the day progresses, thunderstorms and showers are likely in states such as Oyo, Edo, Rivers, Delta, and Imo.

The rainfall pattern is expected to intensify by Tuesday. Thunderstorms and heavier downpours are predicted for Bauchi, Borno, Taraba, and Jigawa in the north. The central region will continue with early cloudy skies transitioning into evening rainfall.

Southern Nigeria is also projected to experience consistent rain showers throughout Tuesday, particularly in coastal and inland locations.

By Wednesday, storms will resume in northern states like Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, and Katsina, lasting from morning till evening. The central zone, including the FCT and surrounding states, will also face moderate rainfall later in the day. Meanwhile, the southern belt is forecast to record light rain throughout the day.

NiMet urged Nigerians to prepare for strong winds, especially before the onset of thunderstorms. The agency advised residents to secure loose objects, stay indoors during storms, avoid standing under trees, and unplug electrical appliances.

Drivers were cautioned against navigating flooded roads, while airline operators were strongly advised to regularly consult NiMet’s flight weather briefings to avoid disruptions and ensure safety.
