Legacy: Book honouring Iorliam Shija unveiled in Makurdi

The Political, literary and academic communities gathered in Makurdi on Sunday 30th March 2025 for the public presentation of “Born Unstable: Tributes in Honour of Iorliam Shija at 40”, a book celebrating the life and contributions of Mr Iorliam Shija , a former Senior Special Assistant to the immediate past governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ioraernyi Ortom on Research, Archives and Documentation (RAD).
The public presentation which held at Balcony Parks and Gardens,.Makurdi, immediately after a Thanksgiving Mass at the Catholic Youth Centre Makurdi, to commemorate his 45th Birthday.
The book which is edited by renowned scholars Mr Maik Ortserga and Dr. Msonter Anzaa, was officially presented by Professor John Tor Tsuwa of the Department of Political Science, Benue State University, while Mr. Terver Adom, the Senior Special Assistant to the Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly on Special Duties, served as the book reviewer.
“Born Unstable” is a commemorative collection of essays honouring Iorliam Shija, a journalist, historian, and intellectual on his 40th birthday. The book is divided into three parts. Part One “Grace Story”, explores his upbringing and influences; “In Search of Stability”, which is Part Two , reflects on his career and struggles; and lastly, part three, “Salute to The Elephant”, celebrates his impact on society as viewed by people who have met him.
A major strength of the book is its diversity of perspectives with contributions from friends, colleagues and associates, offering a well-rounded view of Shija’s life.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the event, Rt. Hon. Terkaa Ucha, ably represented by the Director of Centre for Advancement and Linkages in Benue State University, Dr. Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor, praised Shija’s dedication, resilience, and commitment to his goals. He lauded the honoree’s service to the state and his continuous contributions to society through his works.
In his vote of thanks, Mr. Iorliam Shija expressed deep appreciation to God and everyone who had supported him in his personal and professional life. He disclosed that although he is now 45 years old, the book of tributes was initially compiled five years ago but could not be publicly presented due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures.
The event was attended by family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers who came to celebrate the achievements and impact of Mr Iorliam Shija, who now works with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
The book serves as a testament to Mr Shija’s enduring legacy and an inspiration for future generations in Benue State and beyond.
