NCAA warns airlines against deporting passengers midway

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has strongly condemned the practice of airlines airlifting passengers halfway to their destinations, only to deport them back to Nigeria due to visa or travel restrictions.
In a statement on Thursday, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, described the practice as “completely unacceptable” and warned airlines to provide accurate travel information to passengers before issuing tickets.
“NCAA has received several complaints about airlines selling tickets to passengers, only to airlift them halfway and have them deported due to inadmissibility at transit or final destinations,” Achimugu stated. “Passengers should not be subjected to such distressing experiences.”
Citing the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), the agency emphasized that airlines and their agents are responsible for informing travelers about any potential entry restrictions before departure.
“It is the duty of airlines to screen passengers properly and provide up-to-date information on visa and travel requirements before allowing them to board,” the NCAA stressed.
The agency issued a stern warning to international airlines operating in Nigeria, stating that regulatory actions—including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties—would be imposed on defaulters.
“Effective immediately, any airline engaging in these unfair practices will face strict regulatory measures,” the statement read.
The NCAA urged airlines to uphold professionalism and integrity in the industry while ensuring the well-being of Nigerian travelers.
