Nigeria Customs Service denies tenure extension for CG

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed reports claiming that the tenure of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi has been extended, labeling the news as false and misleading.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, debunked the viral claim, clarifying that no such directive had been issued.
“The attention of the NCS has been drawn to a fake release allegedly from the State House regarding an extension of the tenure of the CGC, Adewale Adeniyi. The NCS wishes to categorically state that this information is inaccurate and misleading,” Maiwada stated.
He emphasized that the appointment and tenure extension of the Comptroller-General remain the sole prerogative of the President, in line with the NCS Act 2023 and other relevant public service regulations.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to transparency, trade facilitation, and national security, Maiwada highlighted the ongoing reforms under Adeniyi’s leadership. These reforms, he noted, are focused on modernizing customs operations, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and enhancing Nigeria’s economic growth.
Maiwada urged the public and stakeholders to disregard unverified reports and rely solely on official government communications for accurate information. He assured that any updates regarding leadership changes within the service would be formally announced by the appropriate authorities.
“The service appreciates the continued support of stakeholders and remains committed to professionalism, transparency, and its mandate to serve the nation,” he concluded.
