Opposition coalition slams Lateef Fagbemi over allegations against Fubara

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, for his allegations against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Fagbemi had accused Fubara of orchestrating pipeline bombings in the state, while defending President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The CUPP described the allegations as “outrageous, baseless, and a hatchet job” aimed at shielding FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, from blame.

The coalition pointed out that Fagbemi failed to blame Wike for his supporters’ involvement in the bombing of a local government headquarters.

In a statement signed by High Chief Peter Ameh and Comrade Mark Adebayo, the CUPP flayed the Attorney General’s assertion, stating that it was shameful to see an Attorney-General of the nation being biased and shielding the obvious culprit in the crisis.

The coalition noted that Fagbemi’s decision to declare Wike innocent and indict a governor who was at the receiving end of pro-Wike proactive actions was a “shameful discretion of the office of the AGF.”

The CUPP questioned the Attorney General’s silence on several incidents, including the burning and bombing of a local government headquarters by Wike’s supporters, and the refusal of the Rivers State House of Assembly to receive the budget from Governor Fubara.

The coalition also recalled a media chat by Minister Wike, where he made several unprintable comments on individuals and communities, including the Ijaw Nation and Pandef.

The CUPP stated that Wike’s comments were designed to create tension and disharmony, and to make the President declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The CUPP called on President Tinubu to call the Attorney General to order, stating that Fagbemi’s actions were an “assault on Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.” The coalition also reiterated its decision to seek legal action to quash the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which it deemed an attack on democratic governance in Nigeria.
