Senate moves closer in converting polytechnic to university

A bill seeking to convert Yaba College of Technology in Lagos State into a full-fledged university has passed its second reading in the Senate.
The proposed institution will be known as the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies.
The bill, which was first introduced in March 2025, aims to provide the legal framework for the transformation and proper management of the new university.
The Senate took the step during plenary, with Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, presiding over the session.
The bill was later referred to the Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further work, with a report expected in four weeks.
This development follows an earlier presidential directive that already approved the upgrade of YabaTech to university status.
According to the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, the move is in line with the country’s plan to improve access to quality education and prepare Nigerian graduates for modern-day challenges in technology and vocational fields.
He explained that the new university will not only offer higher learning opportunities but will also improve the academic environment, provide better facilities, and motivate both students and staff.
The proposed university will focus on technical education and research while also playing a role in addressing the social, cultural, and economic needs of Nigeria.
It is expected to provide a wide range of academic courses and create new opportunities for learning, innovation, and professional growth.
The new law, when enacted, will allow the university to create more faculties, campuses, and institutes.
All assets of the current YabaTech will be transferred to the university, and existing staff will continue their service under the new structure without losing their benefits.
