Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has admitted he is torn between extending his career in Catalonia or calling time on his playing days to settle into a more relaxed life.

Speaking to TV Eleven Sports, the 35-year-old Polish international opened up about the dilemma he currently faces: whether to renew his contract with Barcelona or walk away from the game after rediscovering top form in recent months.

Back in August 2024, Szczesny had seemingly made up his mind — that it was time to hang up his gloves and enjoy life beyond football. But then came a call from Barcelona, a club he could not turn down.

Since arriving in Barcelona, he has proven he still has much to offer, prompting fresh reflection on whether now really is the right moment to stop.

Now a family man, Szczesny acknowledged that any decision must be made jointly with his wife. “It won’t be about whether I’m number one or number two — that won’t determine whether I stay. It’s a family decision,” he explained. “It’ll be something I decide with my wife: whether we want to live in sunny Marbella or Barcelona.”

From the club’s side, the desire is clear: Barcelona want him to stay. The Catalan giants have offered the former Juventus and Arsenal shot-stopper a one-year extension, with the option for an additional season.

President Joan Laporta has also publicly expressed his support for the keeper in recent days, hinting that Szczesny is inclined to continue. “Just the other day, I saw him celebrating with a cigar and he looked like a man who wants to stay,” Laporta told La Vanguardia.

On Monday, speaking to TV3, he reiterated the club’s stance: “We brought in Szczesny because, although Inaki Pena was performing well, we needed someone with more experience between the posts. I believe it was the right decision. Our intention is to keep him — we hope there will be continuity and we’re working towards that.”
