Tinubu calls for intensify efforts as military inducts new combat helicopters into NAF fleet

President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to redouble their efforts in addressing the country’s security challenges, stating that a fully equipped and prepared military is essential for national stability and democratic preservation.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the induction of new Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet on Friday, Tinubu emphasized the strategic importance of the newly acquired aircraft in combating terrorism, banditry, and other threats confronting Nigeria.
“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace,” the President said. “The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped.”
The ceremony, which coincided with the NAF’s 61st anniversary, took place at the Presidential Air Fleet hangar in Abuja. It marked the formal addition of two Augusta A-109s Trekker helicopters, acquired to enhance the nation’s air combat capabilities.
Vice President Shettima described the induction as more than a routine fleet expansion, noting that it signals the federal government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“This is a strategic statement of intent—a demonstration of our collective resolve to defend our nation and reinforce Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa,” he said.
Shettima stressed that despite fiscal challenges, the Tinubu administration has prioritized national security through consistent investment in military hardware and personnel. He further highlighted ongoing multinational efforts to secure the Lake Chad region and urged improved cross-border cooperation to curb insecurity.
“The Nigerian Armed Forces must be prepared not only for internal security but also for regional peacekeeping missions that promote stability and collective security,” he added.
In his remarks, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, hailed the arrival of the Augusta 109s as a vital boost to NAF’s multi-theatre operations. He revealed that the Air Force has received nine new aircraft since the beginning of 2024, including four C-129 attack helicopters and three King Air 360 aircraft.
According to Abubakar, an additional 49 aircraft are expected in the next two years, including:
10 Augusta 109 Trekkers
12 AH-1 Zulu Attack Helicopters
24 M-346 Ground Attack Aircraft
3 Kata 295 Medium Airlift Aircraft
These platforms, he said, would significantly improve NAF’s air mobility, precision strike capabilities, and effectiveness in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.
Abubakar also announced that eight pilots and 18 engineers have already been trained on the Augusta 109s, with more personnel currently undergoing specialized training abroad. These returning experts will spearhead local training programs to sustain operational capacity.
Highlighting NAF’s push for self-reliance, the Air Chief outlined recent research and development achievements, including the revalidation of Alpha Jet ejection seats, the retrofitting of unserviceable rockets, and the design of a test kit for measuring pyrotechnic cartridges.
Notably, a committee has also been inaugurated to oversee the local production of C-57mm rockets—part of a broader plan to develop indigenous defense technologies and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
Abubakar expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his steadfast support and acknowledged Italian defense manufacturer Leonardo for the timely delivery of the helicopters.
He concluded by reaffirming NAF’s commitment to deploying the new assets effectively in defense of the nation.
“These platforms will be optimally utilized to deliver on our mandate and contribute to the broader goals of national security,” Abubakar said.
