UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been assigned to investigate allegations of improper conduct by players Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos and Vinicius Jr following the conclusion of the Champions League derby at the Metropolitano.

The latest European derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid was full of emotions and controversies.

The Atletico side won 1-0 during the match, but it was their rivals that ultimately smiled after securing qualification in a penalty shootout, which was marked by the disallowed penalty against Julian Alvarez for touching the ball twice.

After several days in which that incident seemed to have been forgotten along with the match itself, the Metropolitano clash has once again become a hot topic, much to the dismay of Real Madrid, with some of their key players from that match back in the spotlight.

UEFA has appointed an inspector from its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee to investigate the allegations against Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos and Vinicius Jr for their behaviour after the final whistle.

Following their qualification, the Real Madrid players went to celebrate near one of the stands, close to the away supporters, but also, understandably, near several local fans. Some Atletico supporters threw insults and objects at the Madrid players, whose reactions varied widely.

UEFA is now focusing on the behaviour and actions of these four players, who have been singled out in the reports. The most notable case appears to be that of Antonio Rudiger, as images circulated widely after the match showing him making a throat-cutting gesture with his thumb while staring at the crowd.

Now, all eyes are on the ongoing investigation, with the football world waiting to see whether it results in any disciplinary measures, be they financial or sporting. For Real Madrid, the worst-case scenario would be the imposition of sanctions just days before their crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal.
