Why Dele Farotimi to remain in detention

The Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti has deferred its decision on the bail application of human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi to December 20, 2024.
Farotimi was apprehended in Lagos following a defamation petition filed by legal icon Chief Afe Babalola (SAN). He was subsequently charged and arraigned at the Ekiti State Magistrate Court last Wednesday, where Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ordered his remand at a correctional facility.
Initially, the court set stringent bail conditions, including a ₦50 million bond, a surety residing in Ekiti State with landed property, and the surrender of Farotimi’s travel passport.
With the adjournment, Farotimi will remain in detention for at least the next 10 days as the court deliberates on his bail application.
