Nationwide protest: Gombe CSOs wthdraw, present demands to FG

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Gombe State has announced the withdrawal of its participation in the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024.
Addressing journalists at a press conference held at Hajiya Amina Hall in Gombe , Dr Habeeb Muhammad, spokesperson for the coalition, cited the lack of clarity in leadership and potential hijacking of the protest procession as reasons for their decision.
However, the group presented a list of demands to the federal government, urging prompt action to address critical issues affecting the nation.
He said the government must ensure the safety and security of citizens, alleviate poverty and promote economic prosperity, and revitalize refineries to increase domestic production.
Additionally, the coalition demanded the government to reverse the petrol price to below N300 per liter, review electricity tariffs to make electricity affordable, and restore tertiary institution fees to their previous rates.
The coalition also demands that the government cuts the cost of governance, carefully considers international loans, reduces taxation on citizens by 50%, and implements a new minimum wage of N70,000 while improving welfare packages for workers.
“The government’s prompt attention to these issues would prevent future threats of protest. The coalition apologized for any inconvenience caused by our withdrawal and appreciated the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders.
