Tragedy as top police officer passes away


The Nigerian Police Force has lost a senior officer, as Commissioner of Police Waheed Ayilara, in charge of Akwa Ibom State, has died.
According to reports, Ayilara passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after undergoing prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday.
The family confirmed his passing, stating, “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead.”
A top police officer in Akwa Ibom State also verified the news, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Ayilara, a seasoned officer, took over as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State in February 2024, after being deployed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. He previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
