Breaking: Monday Okpebholo of APC wins Edo governorship election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, has emerged victorious in the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Okpebholo secured his win after a closely contested race against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata.
With the results from 18 local government areas announced, Okpebholo maintained a clear lead, and has been announced as the the man to clinch the governorship seat. The final results, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirmed his victory with a total of 291,667 votes, outpacing Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes, and Akpata, who received 22,763 votes.
The victory solidifies APC’s influence in Edo State, as Okpebholo is expected to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki. The election, which saw a significant voter turnout, was marked by a peaceful process across most local governments, although a few areas reported minor delays.
The official declaration was made by the Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, after the final collation of results from all 18 local government areas.
